Dion Phaneuf lays out Leafs teammate James van Riemsdyk

- March 12th, 2014

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf is known for throwing the occasional big, open-ice hit.

Sometimes he misses. Sometimes he misses big time.

Early in the third period of Tuesday night’s 6-2 loss in San Jose, the Leafs captain lined up Sharks forward Patrick Marleau for a bruising. Unfortunately, Phaneuf missed his target and instead plastered teammate James van Riemsdyk.

Leafs fans collectively held their breath as one of the club’s first-line wingers lay on the ice before retreating to the locker room.

There was legitimate concern about van Riemsdyk’s health — he has suffered concussions before — but he returned to the game shortly afterward.

Nice shot, idiot. Hey, here’s an idea: why don’t you LOOK and make sure you’re lining up the right guy, you lazy asshat.

What a class act. He leaves his feet to hit Marleau in the head and instead plasters his teammate. That is what you call Karma.

Will somebody please now see Phaneuf for what he is?

People keep going to extremes in perception of this guy: Folks say he’s one of the top defensemen in the league because he plays a lot, or, he’s one of the worst in the league because he’s overrated without much talent –> but seriously, why can’t we simply see what seems obvious? He’s got endurance and a willingness to hit, but the downside is that he sometimes doesn’t know where he is on the ice and he doesn’t know WHO he is hitting. He’s a plus AND he’s a liability all in one!

Well that makes it official – if he insn’t in the penalty box, or making a bone head defensive play he now decides to take out one of his own – he is truely the worst asset Toronto has had in years

How can a player voted the worst player in the league by his peers, a player who frequently scores in his own net, a player who cannot skate faster than an atom player end up captain of the Leafs? Now he really literally hit rock bottom by hitting one of the Leafs best players. Obviously he didn’t do it intentionally but it truly shows his lack of skills. Am I the only Leafs fan who thinks that this farce has lasted long enough?

If you’re lining up a big hit, and your team mate is almost next to him, then DUH! Don’t throw the big hit, you big Pylon!
