Thornton: ‘I’d have my c— out if I scored four goals’

With the Tomas Hertl show in Vancouver right now to play the Canucks on Thursday night, Joe Thornton offered a quote for the ages at the morning skate.

Thornton provided an R-rated answer when asked how he would celebrate if he were to score four goals in a single game like rookie teammate Hertl did Tuesday.

“I’d have my c— out if I scored four goals. I’d have my c— out, stroking it,” Thornton said.

Moments before, according to the Vancouver Province, Patrick Marleau had been questioned about the debate over Hertl’s trick-shot fourth goal.

“Shut up, have you ever played the game?” Thornton interrupted.

Naturally, reporters then turned their undivided attention to the San Jose Sharks captain. And that’s when he started talking about his nude celebration idea.

Of course, context is key here.

Considering Joe Thornton is 34 and a 16-year NHL veteran, this ballsy quote can be interpreted in a number of ways:

1) Thornton was flat-out joking, 2) he was simply trying to make a point about showboating in hockey, 3) he made the off-base remark to take attention off 19-year-old Hertl, 4) he was 100% serious and would actually “have (his) c— out, stroking it.”

In the end — whether he was completely joking, joking to make a point, being a good captain, or serious — it was one helluva soundbite from a professional athlete in the 21st century.

Bravo, Mr. Thornton.

UPDATE: The Sharks have responded with a statement, which has been published by the San Jose Mercury News:

“I don’t think it would be a surprise to anyone in the industry that ‘locker room talk’ exists,” Sharks director of communications Scott Emmert said in a prepared statement. “Professional reporters understand that concept and respect it.”

Emmert called use of the quote “a pathetic attempt to generate some page hits and controversy by reporting an off-the-cuff and off-the-record comment made by someone who wasn’t even being interviewed at the time.”

I’m glad he didn’t score.. I have zero desire to see his c**k. Zero. Maybe less than zero.

Joe did what was right – protect the rookie from dumb reporters trying their hardest to make a bigger story of it than it was – he’d obviously had enough (a Leaf fan)!

Dumb classless millionaires????? If your gonna say that about hockey players then I would love to hear what you would say about the NBA or NFL players. Good on Joe. Who cares. Do we forget that these players are human. Not robots but human like you and me. Anyone who complains or doesnt like what he said are idiots and have nothing better to do then just complain about this crap.

Looks like the Sharks need to fire whoever let a clown like this into the dressing room. My guess, this is the first and last opportunity for a blogger who doesn’t understand the rules. Enjoy the only 5 minutes your likely to ever get.
