Konopka: Let’s pit Team Canada vs. ‘Princess Phaneuf’ & Snubs

- January 8th, 2014

There’s no question Canada has enough talent to field two medal-calibre teams at the Olympics.

So why not find out if the roster Hockey Canada picked can beat the snubs?

Buffalo Sabres enforcer Zenon Konopka posted a photo to Instagram showing his lineup of “scraps” — fittingly on a loose piece of paper — and the caption “Maybe Team Canada wants to play my scraps in a Charity Game before heading overseas #nicehandwriting”

He also used the opportunity to deliver of couple of jabs to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Konopka, of course, was joking … but, boy, does the team he picked look good.

Even with “Princess Phaneuf” as the eighth defenceman.

Oh, and I guess Joffrey Lupul got cut once Konopka remembered Jeff Skinner exists.

I’m just wondering how many names Konopka had to look up so he could spell them correctly?
    Just saying! :)

The Konopka comment was low-class but I can expect that from a meathead enforcer who can barely play for one of the NHL’s worst teams. Most other players wouldn’t do it publicly and neither should you. Say what you want about the weaknesses in Phaneuf’s game and that he is overpaid (which I happen to agree with), but there is no need to express it like a 3rd grader. Phaneuf has his merits and a lot of coaches would like to have him. Phaneuf is smarter to stay out of the box and avoid fights because the Leafs need him for big minutes. To sit in the box after fighting a fringe loser like Konopka would be stupid. Don’t give an idiot like that the satisfaction of any attention, and don’t lower yourself and the Sun/Canoe to his level.

^ wow, give the guy a break. Gonna miss him and Hoppy in Minnesota. By the way, the “scraps” still looks like an NHL team I would take ANY DAY. Good luck Zenon, and I’m saving my bottle of ZK28 for a special occasion.

Too bad Zenon Konopka didn’t spend as much time learning to skate as he does trying to funny, he might actually be a hockey player worthy of talking about.

    Phaneuf sucks

  6. Brian Burke | January 9, 2014 at 6:47 am

Phaneuf does not fight because Princess Phanuef cannot fight . valuable minutes thats a laugh. what a bad contract on this lightweight.

    DAVID WILD,

This is the problem with the world today, people like you (and social media of course). This was a joke not to be taken seriously. But people have nothing better to do than criticize from behind a computer screen.

Anyways, this is quite the lineup and shows the depth of Canadian hockey. Also goes to show all the people out there snubbing Canada’s hockey development. There is nothing wrong with it, the fact of the matter is that hockey has gone global and is becoming more and more popular around the world.

I think he has a point, but it seems that Canada maybe did not pick the best possible team, but they choose the players that are performing well in the first half of the season. It is a hard and thankless job for the team organizers, G.M;s and coaches to decide, If they come back without a medal, then these players that were snubbed would have a point. The other countries over there look pretty good also such as Russian, Sweden, and USA, but They should still come home with a medal. The thing I fine lately with the team Canada picking, and the Juniors also is they tend to pick strictly offensive, even offensive defensemen with little toughness, and in Cases like these, teams like the ones mentioned above will walk all over you. I wish them Well.
    Good Luck

It is a great idea for a tune-up match except for injuries. Would “Team B” take someone out to open a spot for themselves? The game would have to be on Olympic sized ice of course. I think Team B would be better off to kidnap team Slovenia or team Austria and replace them. That would be awesome! Austria wins Olypic gold for hockey! (Or some other country not recognised as a hockey nation)
It is too bad that all the insurnace these guys would need to carry for a charity game means this would never happen.

lol Konopka you useless punch-bag – notice how none of his teammates make the cut….crappy player on a crappy team.

  11. Marty | January 9, 2014 at 7:42 am

Yeah he threw in a jab at Phaneuf… But he still picked him on this Roster. He’s got more faith in Phaneuf than I do.

I thought it was funny and I’m a Leaf fan. It’s just a joke. Good idea I would love to see this team play Team Canada. I think there is a few names on this list that would like to show Yzerman he made a mistake on a few picks.

  13. pete castel | January 9, 2014 at 10:25 am

Just a player having some fun ,jeez some people are thin skinned and need to lighten up!
Princess Phaneuf should be happy he gets a mention he really doesn’t deserve to be in that group but without him it wouldn’t be funny.

  14. Joe | January 9, 2014 at 10:26 am

@David say what you will about Konopka; he’s an easy target. However Phaneuf does ANYTHING but stay out of the box!!! Top 30 in the league in PIMs!!! Pay more attention!!! He’s ALWAYS taking stupid penalties!!!

You might just be a little too sensitive for puck, eh?

  15. Sid | January 9, 2014 at 11:10 am

Well I am a Leaf fan and I think this is both insightful and funny. Lighten up!

  16. Jdude | January 9, 2014 at 11:42 am

pretty good but nugent Hopkins should be in between ebs and hall. duuhhhh
    and Crawford over ward

  17. Dan | January 9, 2014 at 12:29 pm

Jesus David Wild I’ve never seen a more torontonian response ever. It was a joke and you’re defending your boy like he was pointed a rifle at him. Relax. Hahaha Jesus relax. And phaneuf is average anyway don’t have a heart attack when he’s traded soon because that new contract is crippling

  18. Trevelyan | January 9, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Wow, the Leafs fans really took this one seriously. Chill out guys, I’m pretty sure it’s meant as a joke. Quite a bit of criticism for a guy who is in the show, regardless of his skating. More than I can say for the rest of us I presume. And if you don’t think Phaneuf is a princess, you’re not watching the same games everyone else is.

  19. Phil | January 9, 2014 at 3:46 pm

Interesting. I didn’t realize Zenon still played in the NHL. Good for him. Pretty good looking team, replacing one injury prone player for another seems odd though.

  20. Belenos | January 9, 2014 at 4:05 pm

I notice even Konopka didn’t put himself on the “B team”. If Phaneuf is a princess then what does that make Konopka? I’m surprised they let him use a pen to write. I visualize him with the big red primary printer pencil, tongue out the corner of his mouth making backwards “R”s.

  21. bogus | January 9, 2014 at 4:55 pm

This ( team Canada) is what happens in the Land of Plenty. I bet Phaneuf is laughing all the way to the Bank at the Jealousy of the morons that cant even come close to his Hockey skills.

  22. Will | January 10, 2014 at 7:10 pm

Why does this line sound suspiciously like “sloppy seconds”? It’s just as classless.

  23. Greg | January 11, 2014 at 8:27 pm

    Phaneuf is komisarek

  24. Greg | January 11, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Konopka can’t skate? Dollar for dollar Phaneuf may very well be the worst skating defenceman in the history of the national hockey league! And he’s a nerd

  25. GREG IS RETARDED | June 16, 2014 at 10:18 pm

    Greg:
What the hell are you saying. Phaneuf is easily at least a #2 defenceman on an average team, or maybe a very good #3 defenceman on a great team. You don’t have to exaggerate to try to make your point.
