Luongo trolls Canucks; Kassian ejected for vicious hit

- March 6th, 2014

The relationship between Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks ended less than amicably, and during the club’s first game back Thursday since the NHL trade deadline the Florida Panthers goaltender delivered a not-so-subtle jab to his former club.

Canucks goalie Eddie Lack was getting shelled by the Dallas Stars. Lack gave up five goals on 17 shots in two periods of work before being replaced by Jacob Markstrom. Vancouver lost the game 6-1.

Enter the team’s former No. 1.

While it was surely intended as a joke, given the way Vancouver’s goaltending drama has played out over the past year it would be no surprise if Luongo felt as though he was playing second fiddle during that time.

But that wasn’t the only noteworthy incident.

Canucks bruiser Zack Kassian was ejected from the game at 18:30 of the first period after this brutal hit from behind on Brenden Dillon where he introduces the Stars blueliner’s face to the edge of the boards.

Dillon left the game after the check but returned to start the second period.

Kassian received a boarding major and 10-minute game misconduct.

It would be no surprise if Kassian gets a call from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. Based on his reaction after the hit, you get the feeling Kassian knows he’s earned an appointment at the principal’s office.

Keep in mind that the Canucks winger was suspended five games earlier this season after a high stick on Sam Gagner that broke the Edmonton Oilers centre’s jaw during the pre-season.

At least they still have the bag of pucks they got for Luongo, Schneider and Hodgson. They’ll come in useful sometime.

Luongo has every right to give a tounge in cheek jab at the Nucks. Kassian has played goon hockey at every level. This should send his career back to the east coast league. He’s a guy that hurts his team. They’ll do much better without him.

Who’s teaching these guys to turn into the boards with their heads down like this? Putting their life on the line to draw a penalty – yikes.

I’m not sure who wrote this article but the video is quite clear. I call that I’ve been poorly coached! The video is in slow motion and give the illusion tha Kassian has time to let up when you can clearly see the player being hit turns around as soon as the puck is released to avoid the hit like a coward! Enough said…

I have never been so embarrassed to be a Canucks fan. Gillis has ruined this team. Torts is the worst coach and needs to be fired.

Kassian is a cheap shot artist who picks his spots. You live and die by the sword in the NHL. Someone like Scott Stevens will straighten him out. After he gets what’s coming he can join the Lindros brothers on their next fishing show.

Kassian should be suspended for the remainder of this year and next as well.
He ran the player from behind, left his feet and drove the Dallas player head first into the boards.
That was a deliberate intent to injure and then some.

Don’t forget Dave Bolland has missed 49 games and counting after a run in with this goon. Broke a guys jaw too?!! C’mon!!

Sure Longo has the right to say whatever he wants, but a CLASSY thing to do is to shut yer yap and consider the fact that Eddie Lack is at a different point in his career than LOulangos. No Classo Roberto.

Kassian is a Real Meat Head !!! He does alot of these ridiculously Dummy Scary plays …he needs to pull it together before he injures someone for life !! The Gagner dumber than dumb wild stick swinging play was the bonehead idiot play of the year busting Gagne’s jaw and removing several teeth !!

Thanks for correcting, Anthony. Now, we can all like Luongo again, since he is no longer on the hated Canucks.

MUST WE return to the goonery of almost 10 years ago when Steve Moore was injured? How soon we forget and then history repeats… Lately it looks like the Canucks have already given up. I feel for Eddie Lack. He’s young, is a good goalie and will learn IF he doesn’t get injured or discouraged. Gillis might be a good Agent but a GM he is not.
