Radio station jokingly puts bounty on Bryan Bickell, collects almost $5,000

Bryan-Bickell

Placing a bounty on an athlete, whether it’s in the NHL or NFL, can have serious consequences.

A couple of sports radio jocks in St. Louis jokingly decided to test those waters by placing one on Chicago Blackhawks forward Bryan Bickell after his knee-on-knee hit that sent St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka to the dressing room last Saturday during Game 2 of their first-round playoff series.

Bickell was not suspended for his hit on Sobotka, who wasn’t seriously hurt and hasn’t missed any playing time since.

Surprisingly, the hosts of “The Fast Lane” on ESPN 101 raised quite a bit of cash from their listeners before coming clean about the whole situation.

“Apparently, management is not too happy with us,” one of the co-hosts said. “For those of you who don’t understand, we were just playing around and kidding.

“We had $4,825 committed. So it was probably going to go to charity when Bickell was knocked out of the game. Well, it was going to go to charity, since the players couldn’t take it.

“We’d never really advocate a bounty, but you get what we were saying about this guy. He’s earned it.”
