Stars’ Jamie Benn delivers nasty elbow to Matt Cooke’s face

- January 19th, 2014

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn could be looking forward to some quality time in the press box after this nasty check to Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke’s head Saturday.

Just seconds into overtime with the score tied 2-2, Benn carried the puck across centre ice and bowled over Cooke with his elbow extended.

It’s safe to say NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan will have a good look at this one. Benn would be considered a repeat offender after having been fined $10,000 for a cross-check on Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones last March.

As if the hit wasn’t mind-boggling enough, Benn was not penalized on the play.

Thankfully, Cooke appeared uninjured. Yes, that’s a good thing. Despite his own history when it comes to elbows hitting heads, nobody deserves to have their brain turned into mush. Cooke’s conscience knows that better than anybody.

UPDATE: According to multiple reports, Benn will not have a hearing for this hit. Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News thinks the NHL may have ruled it as defensive contact.

He should get 3 or 4 games for that. I don’t care who it was…If your coming across the middle with you head down…

Kudos to Jamie Benn. It is better to give than to receive. Payback to Matt Cooke long overdue (especially with his track record of malicious hits on others).
