For the past week, visitors to NHL.com have been treated to a bit of video game nostalgia.
In honour of Electronic Arts’ video game NHL ‘94’s 20th anniversary, the website has asked its players to recall their favourite memories.
Even though NHL ’94 was the third game in the series, it’s considered by many in the gaming industry to be the standard-setter in video game quality.
Making the cover were Andy Moog of the Boston Bruins, and Tomas Sandstrom of the Los Angeles Kings. Only three players remain in the league that are in that game: Teemu Selanne, Jaromir Jagr and Roman Hamrlik. Alexei Kovalev was among that list up until his recent departure from the game.
Current NHL players, like the New Jersey Devils’ Adam Henrique, shared their memories of playing the game. Henrique, 23, would have been a little more than three years old when the game was released.
“The game’s come a long way since 1994,” Henrique said.
Indeed, the latest installment, NHL 13 (with Philadelphia Flyers’ captain Claude Giroux on the cover), is quite the hockey simulator.
What do you think? Have the graphics in the NHL series blown you away over the years?
