Vladimir Putin is to hockey what Kim Jong-il was to golf

- May 12th, 2014

Vladimir Putin has joined the ranks of world leaders who are also elite sports stars.

On Saturday, the Russian president laid waste to his opponents during an amateur exhibition hockey game in Sochi. He led a team that included former NHLers Pavel Bure and Viacheslav Fetisov, scoring six goals and adding five assists en route to a 21-4 victory in which his opponents tried really, really, really hard to stop him from scoring.

He’s jersey No. 11 in the video below.

“One needs all the skillfulness to score so many times,” Bure told ITAR-TASS. “That the president of the world’s largest country with a busy schedule has learned to play ice hockey and found time for that is an indication of his excellent shape.”

Putin, 61, had apparently only picked up hockey in recent years.

Sound familiar?

Kim Jong-il, the former Dear Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, was supposedly bad ass at golf.

On one day in 1994, he picked up a golf club for the very first time in his life and — as witnessed by 17 security guards — shot a 38-under-par round of 34 that included 11 holes-in-one. This was, of course, was the story told by the country’s state news agency.

The difference between Kim and Putin, however, is that one of these ridiculous acts was caught on tape.
