Parise supporter accuses Devils fans of issuing death threats

- March 21st, 2014

On the heels of an incredible story out of San Jose comes a disturbing video (below) — and a description recounting the events – that makes the hockey community look barbaric.

A man who goes by the user name “modano9999″ on reddit attended Thursday’s Minnesota Wild-New Jersey Devils game at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and was apparently harassed by people around him.

He claims he was berated by Devils fans for sporting a Zach Parise jersey in enemy territory.

Parise left the Meadowlands a couple years ago, inking a long-term deal in Minnesota with buddy Ryan Suter. Thursday was his first game playing his old club in their barn.

Among other things, the man was apparently told to “jump off a bridge.” The next time he sits in a particular section at the Prudential Center “it will be your life that you lose,” he says he was  told.

(Some of the guys in the video appear intoxicated. This doesn’t excuse their behaviour, but it’s worth noting.)

His lengthy explanation on reddit, which is definitely NSFW, can be read here.

Keep in mind the Parise jersey- wearing man’s reddit post is just one side of the story. He is clearly biased, so some things may be exaggerated. Nothing he claims has been verified by arena staff, etc.

Quick personal anecdote…

A few years back I attended a first-round playoff game in Montreal. It was the Habs versus the Philelphia Flyers. I’m not a fan of either club, but I wore a Philly t-shirt to the rink to support my buddy, a Flyers fan.

Although most Bell Centre attendees swore at me in French and I couldn’t make out the entirety of their remarks, we were harassed virtually the whole time. We were booed non-stop in the concourse and washroom, and I was spit on once.

For the most part, I laughed it off. I never took offence. People are passionate about hockey and I was on the wrong side of the battle lines — in Montreal no less.

I was never told to “kill myself,” however, so I totally understand why this man is upset. That, in my opinion, is taking team support too far.

UPDATE: A Devils fan responded on Reddit, exposing the Parise fan as a liar that fabricated the whole story. He has deleted his original post.

I was at this game… I was sitting two rows behind this guy… Many things he left out.. He started screaming at the crowd, unprovoked… Then he continued to give people the finger when Parise was being Boo-ed…. Then his mouth.. Many artists use paint to create their artwork, he used profanity to create his.. I was there with my two children and was horrified by the vulgar language of this guy, and then yes, people then responded. Mostly those with parents.. He was calling the women in the section “C*NTS” that was after beer #6…

Then security, who could not have been more professional, was told to go “F off!”…

THEN… my favorite portion of the evening was when he pulls out his phone and starts video taping. BUT… He has both of his middle fingers up as he is spinning around with the camera in hand and yes he was then told where to go.. He showed up looking to find a problem and seemed to be shocked when he found it!

    He was no victim!
