Canadian ref snubbed in handshake line at World Cup

At least Canadian World Cup assistant referee Joe Fletcher can laugh about being snubbed in the handshake line.

While waiting in line prior to Chile and Spain taking the field Wednesday, Fletcher offered his hand as an official (possibly from FIFA?) shook Spanish captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ hand before moving on to another player, leaving the ref high and dry.

The Niagara Falls, Ont. native tried to recover by running his hand on his head as if he were combing back his hair. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to finesse.

Casillas gave Fletcher a pat on the back as they both cracked a smile over the embarrassing moment. Seconds later, the official came back and shook the ref’s hand, which made Fletcher chuckle about the minor ordeal.

Fletcher did good…I am happy that the Official came back to him.
