Greek soccer coach hit in face by cup, instinctively dives

- March 3rd, 2014

That guy who gets nailed in the face with a beverage and goes down like he got shot? It’s Panathinaikos manager Giannis Anastasiou.

OK, we kid about the diving, but things got nasty in the stands Monday during a Greek Super League meeting between Panathinaikos and arch rivals Olympiakos. Fans threw anything they could get their hands on — including flares — onto the pitch and eventually confronted riot police. A cop motorcycle was set on fire and authorities dispersed the crowd using tear gas.

Greek police announced 11 arrests as a result of the unrest.

As for Anastasiou, he returned to the game soon after the flying cup incident.

“I feel a little dizzy, but I’m otherwise fine,” he told the Associated Press after his club’s 3-0 victory.

What kind of story is this? The guy looked like he got hit pretty hard with a full cup of soda and went down holding his face. Not sure I would consider that a dive! Let’s see what the writer of this article does if I peg one off his nose. Chances are he might take a “dive” too. What crap journalism with a totally misleading headline. If your purpose was to make soccer players look bad, all that you accomplished was making yourself look bad. Time to go back to journalism school you halfwit.

Yes, he did get hit by a cup of pop. Hard to tell from the video if it hit his face or his shoulder took most of the impact. Was it hard enough to make him fall…in my opinion, no. Verdict: Dive – or in hockey terms – 2 minutes for embellishment.
