Toronto Raptors fans start online petition to end pizza madness

- March 18th, 2014

It’s laughable, really.

Just ask former Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy, who had this to say about the obnoxious cheering that goes on whenever the Toronto Raptors reach the 100-point mark …

For those unfamiliar with the gimmick, Raptors fans win a free slice of Pizza Pizza if the hometown team reaches triple digits and wins the game. (Prior to this season, the team was not required to win).

Winning or losing, fans would cheer regardless whenever the Raps reached 100.

Last week, though, in a 99-86 win over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies, the Raptors came up short. And, despite the positive result, some boos were heard from the 18,000-plus in attendance.

That has one group petitioning the pizza promotion.

“The Toronto Raptors are Canada’s team,” the petition reads. “They deserve respect and admiration when they win games, regardless of how many points they score. Booing a winning team on their home court is unacceptable.”

We just hope these aren’t the same fans who were OK with the Raps “tanking” a few years ago.

The Toronto Raptors are Canada’s team??!?!? Hmmm no. They’re barely Toronto’s team. Based on attendance, merchandise sold, and TV ratings, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are Canada’s team.

Common davey boy, they are obviously referring to the fact that Toronto is canada’s only representation in the NBA. and if we are transcending through all sports its also obvious that the Leafs or Canadians are Canada’s “team”, with hockey being the countries official sport.. i wouldn’t even rank the roughriders in top 5. are you even canadian?

David, Raptors are 12th out of 30 teams this season and are averaging 18,000. Ratings are on the rise & respectable, Google it. Check your facts.

Yeah Davey Boy, you really missed the point

Actually, the Roughriders get better TV ratings than the Canadians, have higher average attendance than either the Leafs or the Canadians, have higher average attendance as the visiting team, and sell more merchandise than all sports teams in Canada save for the Leafs (and only barely). The Leafs are Ontario’s team. No one outside of Ontario cares about the Maple Laughs. The Roughriders are loved all over the country and internationally, heck, there’s a Roughriders fan club in Australia. The Roughriders have been Canada’s team for years, when the Laughs win something, maybe they’ll sell a few coffee mugs outside of Ontario.

Oh, and by the way, Lacrosse is Canada’s official sport.

Thomas, are you Canadian? The riders are huge across this country. They may not be bigger than the leafs or Canadians but they surely are number 3. Rider nation is all across western canada and into Ontario. Those fans are insane. Leaf fans like to think they are hardcore but when you have a team that wins 4 Grey Cups in over a hundred years and they still have diehard fans, the leafs and habs have nothing on them.

@David – As a Habs fan, this pains me, but according to your own criteria, the Toronto Maple Leafs are Canada’s team. In fact, the Leafs have generate the most revenue of ANY sports team in North America.

the fans want pizza – is it really that hard to understand?! People need to lighten up,

and yes they’re Canada’s basketball team – easier Riderfan

    @AEGIS – North America? Wrong.

Anyone who thinks some shoddy CFL team (clearly a joke league NO ONE in the world cares about, including even most of Canada) is ‘Canadas team’ is just delusional.
