ESPN pulls plug on Ron Burgundy’s SportsCenter appearance

- December 5th, 2013

So ESPN has pulled the plug on Will Ferrell-as-Ron Burgundy hosting SportsCenter tonight.

Probably the wisest — and safest — thing to do, considering the news expected to come down Thursday.

When ESPN discovered that a decision on whether sexual battery charges would be laid against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, the favourite to win the Heisman Trophy, would be announced Thursday, Burgundy was banished from the set of SportsCenter.

Good call, ESPN.

Considering the sensitive nature of the news about Winston, it makes perfect sense to keep a fictional movie character as far away from it as possible. Sexual battery is, obviously, not a topic any TV station wants a wise-cracking Burgundy to tackle.

We could probably use a break from the guy anyway. Ferrell has been everywhere in recent days, promoting his new Anchorman flick by appearing in character all over your TV.

Doing curling commentary for TSN last Sunday in Winnipeg. A spot on a North Dakota news program. Interviewing Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning on ESPN.

Heck, even Emerson College in Boston got into the act,  renaming its communications school the  Ron Burgundy School of Communication for 24 hours.

Have we had just about all we can stomach of Burgundy, yet?

Fortunately, ESPN realized their little Burgundy promo stunt had a good chance of going sideways with the Winston news sure to be aired at the top of the broadcast. And that would have been no laughing matter.

UPDATE: Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs said Thursday afternoon that Jameis Winston will not be charged in the alleged rape of a fellow student.
