FOX Sports makes an extremely unfortunate typo in NHL caption

A screen grab shows FOX’s gaffe before it was edited later in the day.

Maybe this isn’t the best way of looking at what was undoubtedly a typo by FOX Sports on Sunday, but the probability of editors at the American-based website making such a poor mistake was pretty low (around 4%) to begin with.

After all, there are just 27 players of African American ancestry (out of 690) in the NHL at the moment, meaning the chances of the following unfortunate gaffe happening at just the right moment were pretty low to begin with.

“Predators rookie D Seth Jones scored the n—est goal of his young career against the Canadie…,” a cutline under a photo of Jones, who is of African American descent, read.

Why the cutline cuts off with “Canadie…” we have no idea, but that’s beside the point.

Jones, the fourth-overall pick by the Nashville Predators in this year’s NHL draft, scored the game-winner in a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night.

Clearly, though, the editors over at FOX meant to write “biggest” instead of, well, a racially-insensitive term.
Sorry for putting you on blast, FOX.

UPDATE: The cutline has been adjusted …

4% chance of the error is based on what exactly? The N key is right beside the B key on my keyboard…

This is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t stand Fox, but c’mon. “Niggest” isn’t even a WORD fer chrissake. The “B” on the keyboard is right beside “N” so it’s a totally understandable goof. Furthermore, both players in the photo were Caucasian. The people who think this is an egregious mistake all deserve serious kicks-in-the-balls.

For crying out loud, it’s not as if the editor had written n—a or “n—-r”!

And btw, there are perfectly valid and “non racially-motivated” words that start with “nigg”, such as “niggling” or even “niggardly”. Admittedly, “niggest” is not one of them, so yes, it was an honest mistake.

Would this story even be news if it had happened on some other network beside Fox News??

    Just asking.
