Really? Stroumboulopoulos the new face of HNIC: Report

- March 9th, 2014

george

Hockey Night’s Coach’s Corner segment could soon have a new look.

While details remain scant, TSN’s Bob McKenzie let hockey fans in on a little secret Sunday night.

If McKenzie is to be believed, George Stroumboulopoulos is poised to take over for HNIC legends Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, although the TSN insider does maintain both will continue to play a role.

Last year, Rogers grabbed control of hockey media rights across Canada after inking a 12-year, $5.2 billion deal with the NHL.

As part of the deal, CBC retained Saturday night rights, but won’t profit off them.

To that end, Rogers also controls Saturday night content, which includes staffing on-air talent.

    Horrible, ridiculus

he could not get his own show right……..now he wants to mess with the fabric of Canada…he is just not likeable……to…Ben Mulroneyish……….ok host…..but……not to be seen by to many people

What a ridiculous choice. How about hiring someone who knows a lot about hockey, you know, someone who has been directly involved in the game for most of their life. Better yet, keep MaClean. I see I’ll be buying the NHL Center Ice package and watching all my games there.

I hope Rogers goes broke from this and loses everything. They are the poster child for consumer ripoff and poor service

Major mistake this person is so out of touch with the real world

I really do like George as a talkshow host, his show is very good. He is not a good choice for HNIC though.

A very biased Montreal fan. This would be very sad for all of Canada.

LEAVE RON MACLEAN OR WILL PROTEST IN THE MOST CANADIAN WAY POSSIBLE. I WILL WRITE YOU A STERN LETTER.

Strombo as the face of HNIC is like a turd on a pizza! Horrible choice..

  10. nanz | March 10, 2014 at 9:53 am

Yes! Finally! Get rid of Maclean (his kiss-up attitude) and silly puns are a waste of public dollars. Take Cherry and his promotion of 70′s style hockey (as though that’s proudly Canadian somehow) with you on the way out Maclean!

@ Wayne. Little harsh don’t ya think? I hope they go broke? And layoff 20,000 ++ canadian employees? Great idea.
As for Strombo, he’s an awesome guy, but yes I think they could have found someone more hockey centric.

Putting Strombo on HNIC is a very bad decision. Rogers has again demonstrated that they suck.

Thank heavens McLean is toast frankly I stopped watching HNIC because (A) it was really HNIC in Toronto and (B) I couldn’t abide McLeans sneers. Seems like Rogers will chnage both. Strange replacement but heck a mute would be better than McLean

Rogers says Ron McLean will take on a minor role. What exactly do they mean, he will just do Coaches Corner. This is a huge mistake. Both Don Cherry and Ron McLean should leave and go to another network then Rogers will see exactly how they have ruined what is TRULY CANADIAN. Listen up Rogers, your customers (I would say valued customers but you don’t think so) are telling you exactly what they think. BAD IDEA.

Can you really see don cherry talking to a punk on coaches corner? For what Ron and Don stand for and handle themselves, Stroum is just the worst pick EVER! If that’s the only pick Rogers has…. Our future is in trouble!! Scary and absolutely no confidence in Stroum.

  16. Markus78 | March 10, 2014 at 8:21 pm

Stroums skateboards and Dons jackets!! Unreal.

Moore says that Rogers is after a demographic that is both younger and less hockey-obsessive’—-They are saying to Canadian Hockey Fans…’we are after a demographic that is LESS HOCKEY OBSESSIVE’…What a Joke, what an Insult to Canadian Hockey Fans…and Strombo would be perfect for a new ‘oprah show’ or getting a gig on ‘the view’…as main hockey host–where’s my remote!

  18. FPR | March 11, 2014 at 2:32 pm

So Rogers picks a guy who thinks a hockey stick is global warming indicator. Probably never been on skates in his life. What a maroon!

Ron Maclean is my favourite on air personality/broadcaster. I look forward to his wit and intelligent commentary and high degree of professionalism. There is nobody I would rather watch as either a hockey commentator or olympic host. When Ron is on, I watch more, and I enjoy it more. Things seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

  20. amjiit | March 12, 2014 at 3:34 pm

    c’mon really, Stroumboulopoulos.

This is truly heinous, I will never watch hockey night in canada again.

    What were these people thinking?
    Never mind obviously they weren’t.

  21. Ann | March 15, 2014 at 10:09 pm

This is a colossal mistake. As Don Cherry stated, ‘Strombo’ better know his stuff or he will be found out….hockey fans are very savvy and they know if you know your stuff. Why was no serious consideration given to one of the many knowledgeable former hockey players who for years have been associated with HNIC and who have instant recognition and respect with HNIC fans? These are former players who, year after year, eat, sleep and breathe hockey 24/7/365 and these are the men who deserved a chance to replace Ron and Don, not George Stromboulopolous. They are the committed ones who have paid their dues for years by devoting themselves to Canada’s greatest game. I can only imagine their disappointment and anger at this latest turn of events. What on earth was Rogers thinking?

  22. Ann | March 15, 2014 at 10:43 pm

In my comment above, I should have stated “these are the men who deserved a chance to host HNIC, not George Stromboulopoulos” vice “these are the men who deserved a chance to replace Ron and Don, not George Stromboulopoulos”.

Strombo hosting HNIC?? Give me a break!! What’s next, Ben Mulroney and Tanya Kim from E-Talk doing Coaches Corner?? Another piece of Canada and 60 years of tradition down the tubes. Ted Rogers must be rolling in his grave, if he were still alive, he would never allow this!

  24. Wayne | July 6, 2014 at 8:09 pm

HNIC has been “Toronto-fied” against the will of the rest of Canada. It will start with host George Stroumboulopoulos, but give it a couple of months and they’ll add “Coaches Corner with Steven & Chris”, and “After 40 Minutes with Ben Mulroney & Tanya Kim with panelists Gary Bettman and Thomas Mulcair”. Yet another slice of the fabric of Canada taken away, by executives in a city where the majority of people come from countries where hockey isn’t even a word. Ted Rogers must be rolling in his grave!

  25. BoycottRogersAdvertisers | October 23, 2014 at 9:22 pm

Roger’s quarterly profit down 28% !!! This is the only hope for restoring Hockey broadcasting quality and integrity in Canada. Hockey fans can help by boycotting Roger’s advertisers. It’s probably one of the few things Roger’s seems to give a dam about – or will understand or respond to. There’s an email going around – sent out after Saturday’s games that lists Roger’s NHL games advertisers to avoid – and competitors names and products to buy instead. It says notice goes to the Roger’s advertisers too. Seems to spread virally.

  26. Qman | October 25, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Well it’s a few weeks in, overall I say HNIC is better, but Strombo totally sucks, his wardrobe is weird, he moves around too much, can’t believe they are using the STUPID RED CHAIRS!
Thank god for Kelly hrudey, PJ Stock, , Scott Oak, and yes I even am thank full for Glenn Healy of all people. Dump Strombo, or just leave him with 5 min per hour. Less Strombo time #hashtag :)
