Rangers-Devils outdoor game delayed because of the sun

[UPDATE: The game started approx. one hour after it's scheduled start time of 12:30 p.m. EST.]

An NHL-first delayed the start of Sunday’s anticipated outdoor game.

Sunday afternoon’s New York Rangers-New Jersey Devils game at Yankee Stadium was suspended due to “glare on the ice.”

That’s right, the sun delayed the start of an NHL game as close to 50,000 fans watched on, killing the atmosphere inside the venue.

For those who already hate the idea of stadium games, this will serve as fodder, especially after the Leafs-Wings New Year’s Day matchup was played at a snail’s pace due to snow at Michigan Stadium.

Saturday night’s Ducks-Kings game at Dodger Stadium was equally as poor, with a handful of players complaining that the game was a distraction.

On a side note, maybe it’s time for the NHL to introduce Anze Kopitar-style tinted visors ahead of outdoor NHL games.

I HATE the outdoor gimmick games. How can anyone see the puck 100 yards or more away from the ice? Watching on TV the view is almost as bad because of the camera angles. The weather is always iffy and worst of all, the NHL uses it as an excuse to come out with new unis that every “true” fan feels he needs to buy at $300 a pop. Leave this kind of garbage for exhibition games or the Harlem Globetrotters.

First off Kurt that is me in the New York Rangers Green St. Patty’s day Jersey. I was 14 rows up from the dugout and couldn’t see anything but the big screen…and ya know what? I played that sport all my life and there is nothing like seeing a NHL game outside. That is where this sport originated…outside! With the worst seat for any event I have ever seen 10 fold I’d pay 3 times what I did yesterday to experience it again. All I can say is you must be an Islander fan.
