This photo from the Rangers-Islanders game is mesmerizing

- December 21st, 2013

We usually leave anything having to do with gaming to the guys and gals over at Button Mashers, a blog in the Tech section of Canoe.ca.

But this photo was just too cool to pass up.

During Friday night’s game between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders, Eric Boulton (No. 36) received a two-minute minor for spraying Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist.

So what, right?

By chance, a referee was in position to make the call at the same time ice was flying up and over the crease.

The result looked like something out of Mortal Kombat, a video game series that was introduced in 1992.

As you can see below (1:12), one of the characters in MK, Sub Zero, has the power to freeze fellow fighters, a special move gamers use to beat down opponents.

(Yes, I know, I’m not a gamer so my description of Sub Zero is likely making you cringe.)

Anyway, tip of the hat to Bruce Bennett over at Getty for snapping one of the great NHL shots of the year.
