U of M uses massive Gopher video in amusing distraction ploy

- November 26th, 2013

The University of Minnesota used a 108-foot gopher Saturday in an amusing attempt to distract Wisconsin kicker Jack Russell during multiple field goal attempts.

Moments before Russell lined up a 20-yarder to close the first half, the once-viral “Dramatic Gopher” YouTube video appeared on the big screen at TCF Bank Stadium.

The “Golden Gopher,” of course, is Minnesota’s mascot, making the distraction that much better.

It was the first time this season the hosts have used the ploy because it was the first time all season an opposing kicker has attempted a field goal facing the big screen.

The distraction failed the first time, as Russell nailed the aforementioned chip shot.

In the second half, though, Russell flubbed a 38-yard attempt, which the university will undoubtedly hold up as proof the school’s “Dramatic Gopher” video will do the trick moving forward.

As for the rivalry game itself, the visiting Badgers claimed a 20-7 victory.

No matter, though. The star of the show was undoubtedly the Maroon and Gold’s hilarious gimmick, which they say they’ll use in future games.
