Sommit Luangpakham, the man who mowed down five cyclists in Kanata in the summer of 2009, was sentenced to two years in jail Monday.
He was convicted of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and of leaving the scene of an accident.
You can read the Ottawa Sun story here.
He also gets a one-year driving ban, which means in three years his life will begin to return to normal.
Not so for his five victims, all of whom are suffering the consequences of the crash — none more so than Robert Wein, who still has difficulty walking and memory problems. He will never fully recover from the crash. You can read my follow up article one year after the crash here.
As the judge said: “I’m well aware that no penalty of whatever duration will redress the unfairness and tragedy of what has happened to you all.”
I couldn’t have said it any better.
What a travesty of justice. He should get 2 years for each victim. With no chance of parole. Then a life time driving ban. What crime do you have to commit before we take it seriously.
My belief is that he was drunk and fled the scene to protect himself, leaving his victims for dead.
The 2 years sentence results in time being spent in a provincial jail. He should be in Federal prison in Kingston convicted of attempted murder.
