Earnhardt out with concussion

- October 11th, 2012

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss the next two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, at Charlotte and Kansas, because of a concussion suffered in the last lap crash at Talladega Superspeedway last Sunday.

It turns out it is the second concussion in less than two months for NASCAR’s most popular driver.

Earnhardt admitted at a news conference Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway that had suffered a concussion in a crash Aug. 29 during a tire test at Kansas Speedway.

“The wreck at Kansas was really severe and it surprised me how tough it was to get past that,” Earnhardt said.

Missing both Charlotte and Kansas puts an end to Earnhardt’s attempt to win his first Chase for the Championship.
Regan Smith, who was supposed start with his new team — Phoenix Racing’s No. 51 Chevrolet  — Saturday in the Bank of America 500,  will replace Earnhardt in the No. 88 Chevrolet at Charlotte and Kansas.

And A.J. Allmendinger, who was reinstated by NASCAR just last month after a drug suspension, will drive the No. 51 Chevrolet.
