The IZOD IndyCar Series unveiled a 15-race schedule for 2012 that will feature a first time trip to China.
But the series will not be back at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — the site of the tragic death of Dan Wheldon at the season finale on Oct. 16th.
The finale of the 2012 season will be held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California on Sept. 15. It will be a night race at the two-mile oval.
In all there will be four oval races — the aforementioned Fontana. Texas Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and, of course, Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The remainder of the schedule will be seven temporary street courses starting with the season opening Grand Prix of St. Petersberg.
The Honda Indy of Toronto and the Edmonton Indy are both back on July 8th and July 22 respectively.
The other street races are Long Beach, Sao Paulo, Detroit’s Belle Isle Park and Qingdao, China.
Baltimore is pencilled in but that venue has had some financial problems that still may have to be worked out.
Permanent road course events will be at Birmingham,, Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Columbus, and Infineon Raceway in Northern California.
“To be crowned IZOD IndyCar Series champion, the driver must be able to master a diversified race schedule that truly challenges the best in the world,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. “The 2012 schedule offers our drivers and teams the test of conquering both ovals and road and street races. Adding to the diversity of the season, we’re excited with the launch of three engine manufacturers vying for the Manufacturers Trophy.”
