“Ladies and Gentlemen… Dr. Laura Schlessinger! Celebrated talk show host… and Drama Queen!”
I’m sure most have heard by now, that come December, after 30 years of “Hello caller, I’m listening”, the good Dr. Is calling it quits… forcing her more than 9-million listeners in 40 countries (down envy, down!) to seek words of wisdom elsewhere.
She told CNN’s soon to be gone, Larry king, “I want to regain my first amendment rights (of free speech). I want to be able to say what is on my mind, in my heart, what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry.”
Pardonnez-moi, whilst I ralph!
What Doc S. Is referring to, is her views on the use of the “n” word, which she shared with a black female caller who was seeking advice on how to deal with an ignorant neighbour.
During the course of the conversation Dr. Laura used the “n” word, in its entirety, 11 times… offending the caller and many others, including those she answers to.
The next day she apologized.
On our show (The Motts) I defended the Dr.’s comments, drawing some flak from my talk partner. As the subject of the discussion WAS the “n” word, the Doctor chose to be an adult and use the entire word, as opposed to the juvenile “n” reference. I also criticized her for making the apology. If she truly felt the use of the word “in context” was appropriate, she should have stuck to her guns.
She didn’t, and is now whining about first amendment rights, playing the victim of political correctness and, of course, hoping for a groundswell of support.
In most cases the use of the “n” word is disgusting, especially when used as a weapon. This is NOT what Dr. Laura did.
Talk Radio, on occasion, can be a “contact sport”. Emotions run high, and from time to time it may get a little nasty. It ain’t for kids, and the overly sensitive may want to avoid it. (Please!)
You know what they say. “If you can’t take the heat… try easy listening!”
P.S. You may have noticed that throughout this blog , the “n” word was never spelled out… and of course, I would never use it on air. It’s not that I fear my editor, or the C.R.T.C., or the C.A.B. (Canadian Association of Broadcasters) or even the N.A.A.C.P. No, the authority that scares me is C.A.M…. CAROL ANN MOTT!
Listen to the The Motts (Paul and Carol) weekdays… 11 til noon.

It’s amazing we can all hear something different listening to the same words. I thought the loudmouth Dr. S. was just trying to provoke the caller. She had a point at first which seemed to get lost in Dr. S.’s need to be right and make the caller look foolish…by then the use of the “n” word just became foul!
Thank goodness you have C.A.M. control!
Love the Blogs!
That C.A.M. control does serve me well…and it’s ALWAYS ON!
