Happy New Year!

- February 5th, 2011

To me, one of the best things about the Chinese New Year is the same as Jan. 1, birthdays and Mondays – it’s a chance to hit reset.

Like many of you who made New Year’s resolutions, I have broken nearly all of mine. I haven’t been a consistent runner, I went to yoga twice a week for the first two weeks and as you know, I haven’t been blogging.

But the Chinese New Year wasn’t my real source of inspiration this week.

“Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most,” my friend wrote this morning on her Facebook wall.

Of course simply thinking about this before every bad choice you make won’t make you put down that slice pizza, it won’t make you choose your savings over an unreasonably expensive yoga towel and it won’t always make running in -15 C weather seem more attractive than sitting on the couch watching PVRed TV.

But it did make me think twice about my breakfast choice this morning. Pizza Pops or scrambled eggs in a wrap? I’m still thinking how delicious those Pizza Pops would have been but I’m happy I ate the eggs.

And I’m sure my colleague — my second source of inspiration this week — subconsciously thinks about the weight he wants to lose and the healthy person he wants to become when he decides not to have nachos. Choosing a proper breakfast over Pizza Pops seems so trivial when I think about him not eating nachos for six months. Six months!!

It’s even more inspiring to see the results; he has lost 50 lbs in the past six months.

So what I want right now is to curl up on the couch under a blanket and finish my book. But what I’m going to do instead is roll out my yoga mat and give my new portable Pilates kit a try. I might even lace up my running shoes and go for run.
