Hottest summer travel gear

- June 1st, 2010

With the Victoria Day holiday came the unofficial beginning of summer, a season so dear to Canadians tired of hiding from Old Man Winter.

It’s time for beaches, camping, cycling, boating, road trips, street festivals, and the latest travel gear to carry you through any adventure summer throws your way.

Here are a few of my favourite new travel accessories:

Hawaiian-Tropic-Island

1. Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen – Hawaiian Tropic’s new sunscreen packaging includes a snap-off, refillable 60 mL bottle. This handy, pocket-sized sunscreen makes it possible to protect yourself from the rays no matter where your travels take you. The built-in travel bottle is available with the 240 mL SPF 60 Kids Lotion, the SPF 30 Island Sport Sunscreen, and the SPF 60 Baby Lotion.

2. Tilley Endurables clothing - Light, breathable clothing is nearly as important for summer travel as the sun itself. Tilley Endurables has introduced the next generation of its practical travel clothing with the Island Breezes and Different Drummer collections. The ladies’ PV3 Island Breezes hooded tunic is wrinkle-proof, easy to pack, and perfect for covering-up against harmful rays whether on tour or by the pool. Meanwhile, the men’s MA22 touring shorts feature an elastic drawstring at the hem which can be tightened, and eight pockets, including a zippered compartment for a room key or credit card.

3. Yak Pak bags – Yak Pak’s mesh backpack and sling bags are light and breathable totes, absolutely perfect for stashing wet swimsuits or towels, or for easily carrying all your summer essentials. Yak Pak offers its totes, messengers, and backpacks in 26 bright patterns for under $45 each.

4. GateGuru application – Feel at home no matter what American or Canadian airport you’re at with the GateGuru iPhone application. Looking for a Tim Hortons at Toronto’s Pearson Airport? Searching for Okanagan wine tastings at Kelowna International? This application maps out restaurants, washrooms, and shops in major airports and includes more than 11,000 reviews from its community of users. GateGuru will definitely make your summer travel through the skies a little easier.

5. Canon PowerShot D10 - Canon’s intuitive cameras help even the most inexperienced photographer take the perfect shot. Since summer can take you to unexpected places – from the top of a mountain to the bottom of a lake – the Canon PowerShot D10 should be your companion every step of the way. The camera is “waterproof to 33 feet, cold resistant from 14-104°F and shockproof up to 4 feet,” says Canon.
