Monday Mix 1: NXNE Edition

- June 11th, 2012

Welcome to music festival season everyone! This week’s Monday Mix features some choice acts playing this year’s North by Northeast festival. Here’s 8 tracks from some of the Canadians playing the fest this year.

Mix Monday 1: NXNE Edition from JordynMarcellus on 8tracks.

Here’s the track list below.

1 ) Purity Ring – Belispeak

Purity Ring are on the verge of breaking in a big way. This Edmonton duo are the ones to watch coming out of NXNE as they release Shrines  on 4AD Records July 24th in Canada. Their sound is massive and echoing, with exciting live performances that are going to be crammed to the rafters.

See ‘em at Wrongbar June 14 at 1 a.m.

2 ) Beta Frontiers – Defcon

Beta Frontiers makes insurgent, retro-sounding electro music for all kinds of people. They’re playing Sneaky Dee’s on Fridat June 15 at 1 A.M. for what promises to be one sweaty night.

3 ) Eight And A Half – Scissors

This supergroup, with members from The Stills and Broken Social Scene, recently released an album on Canadian super label Arts & Crafts Records. These melancholic synth-poppers are storming Yonge-Dundas Square for a free show 7:30 to 8:10 PM.

4 ) Moon King – Theme For Moon King

This ramshackle guitar-pop duo put on one heck of a live show. Full of energy and vigour — while still able to take a trip down Drone Boulevard — is frontmanned by former Spiral Beach Daniel Woodhead. They’re at Wrongbar Thursday, June 14 at 9 PM.

5 ) Dwayne Gretzky – I Heard It On The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye cover)

This group makes rollicking covers of some of your favourite songs. From Neil Young to Marvin Gaye, they take their own spin on some of your favourite classics. Wander over to the El Mocambo’s main floor Friday, June 14 at 2 AM  to hear them.

6 ) Mac Demarco — Rock and Roll Nightclub

Mac Demarco turns the concept of a singer-songwriter on its head. His music is shambolic in the best possible way — loose and energetic and full of sound and fury signifying rocking. This Edmontonian turned Vancouverite turned Montrealer has a trio of shows, with his first being an 11 PM slot at The Drake Underground Wednesday June 13.

7 ) Needles//Pins – Pulse

This Vancouver trio (previously featured here) are going to make The Shop under Parts and Labour very sweaty — if not outright ruin the place with their fiery brand of guitar-heavy power pop punk rock. Check ‘em out Thursday June 14 at midnight.

8 ) YAMANTAKA//SONIC TITAN – Hoshi Neko

This self-described “Noh-wave” band create some truly atmospheric songs. Dark and foreboding tracks like the above “Hoshi Neko” are gorgeously textured with rich production. This art-rock duo put on a spectacular live show and they will blow the roof of the Garrison Friday June 15 at midnight.
