The 2012 Polaris Music Prize race is officially under way.

The long list of nominees for the seventh annual independent Canadian music award was revealed on Thursday in Vancouver. The 40 names on the list include prominent artists such as Drake, Feist and Leonard Cohen, along with independent acts like singer-songwriter Cold Specks, garage-rockers Japandroids and previous winners F—ed Up (above).

The Polaris prize purports to reward the best Canadian album, with the judging based solely on artistic merit and without commercial consideration. While the list of nominees includes entries from throughout the country, much like the 234-member judging panel, it’s generally dominated by names from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The panel will reduce the long list to a short list of 10 finalists, which will be revealed July 17. After a final grand jury vote, the winner will be announced at a Sept. 24 gala in Toronto. The prize comes with a $30,000 cheque.
