New Stones: Only Doom & Gloom, but I like it

- October 11th, 2012

It’s all Doom and Gloom in The Rolling Stones’ world these days. And that’s the good news.

The veteran rockers have just released their first new song in over six years: A classic-sounding rock nugget titled Doom and Gloom taken from their upcoming compilation GRRR!

Recorded recently in Paris with producer Don Was, the surprisingly strong number recalls early ’70s hits like Honky Tonk Women and Happy. Charlie Watts lays down a thumping tom-tom beat; Keith Richards and Ron Wood contribute clanging, intertwined guitars; and Mick Jagger delivers darkly humourous lyrics about killing zombies, overseas wars and eating dirt by the side of the road. “All I hear is doom and gloom, all is darkness in my room,” he intones — though of course, he also has a simple solution: “Baby, won’t you dance with me?”

Doom and Gloom is one of two new tracks that will appear on GRRR!, which will be released Nov. 12. Earlier this month, Richards and longtime sideman Bobby Keys have told the media that the Stones are gearing up to hit the road again in honour of their 50th anniversary, with a pair of upcoming shows in England and America, and possibly more dates to follow.
