Our ultimate back-to-school playlist

- August 30th, 2013

It’s the most wonderful time of year for parents, and for some kids, it’s the week they’ve been dreading since the end of June. Yes, school is back.

Some students will return with a little extra jump in their steps, while others will have their collective heads slumped in dismay.

But irrespective of their thoughts on the return to the educational system, we have a back-to-school playlist that will cover all of the ABCs.

And please, don’t throw your books down in disgust — you have the opportunity to write in your own great back-to-school playlist in the comment section at the bottom of this article.

So load up, tune in and drop these tracks on your way to school.

ABC, Jackson 5

What better way to kick off the list than this little inspirational Motown classic from Michael and the boys? This No. 1 hit and signature Jackson 5 tune will, at the least, help get them there before the bell rings.

Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, Pink Floyd

The ultimate anti-education song still has one of the classic lines from a teacher shouting, If you don’t eat yer meat, you can’t have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?!

Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, The Ramones

If you’re going to have this cranked, make sure there’s no teachers within earshot, but have the leather jacket on.

We’re Gonna Be Friends, The White Stripes

This very underrated, beautiful track off of 2002′s White Blood Cells showcases the innocence of youth and touches on everything that’s great about the upcoming school year.

I Don’t Like Mondays, The Boomtown Rats

We won’t get into the morbid meaning behind the song (okay, it’s here if you really want to give yourself the willies on the first day), but it really doesn’t have to be reserved for only a school playlist. It essentially sums up everyone’s start to the week.

Hot for Teacher, Van Halen

We don’t know what high school they were portraying in the video, but we’d gladly take Waldo’s spot. And if David Lee Roth is our ride, tardiness would not be an issue.

High School Confidential, Rough Trade

This sexually-charged 1980 hit from Rough Trade may not be for little ears, but hey — read the song title.
