Watch Avril Lavigne’s cringeworthy new video

- April 23rd, 2014

Avril Lavigne is making headlines again – but for all the wrong reasons.

No, it’s not another crappy album, and no, she hasn’t split with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger – yet.

She has just released her ear-bleeding new single with – and we say this politely – an eye-gouging video for her track Hello Kitty.

It’s actually hard to put into words how embarrassingly bad it really is. Whether this is a desperate undertaking to channel her inner Gwen Stefani or a feeble attempt to compete with the Mileys of the world, it all comes off in a sad, last-ditch-attempt-to-be-relevent kind of way.

Sporting a Skrillex-type ‘do, Avril does her best Gangnam Style moves with a few Asian girls in the background. Throw in some sushi, cupcakes, candy, colourful props and some horrific dubstep, and you have a cringeworthy classic. The only thing we can think of is that she’s trying to resurrect her career overseas. Some, including fellow scribe Julia Alexander, are even pointing out that the video comes across as possibly racist.

Anyways, here it is – and don’t say we didn’t warn you:

I saw her interviewed lately. She is obsessed with Hello Kitty and has collections room full of them. So I think thats all this video is.

I can’t really put in a full review of this video……because I stopped watching it when Avril started “singing”. And yes, I went there….air quotes.

I have never considered myself to be a connoisseur of music videos, but this doesn’t seem any better or worse than the few I’ve seen out there. If anything, though, it’s certainly a lot tamer and more tasteful than probably any Miley video out there, that’s for sure.

As for this being bigoted, that’s ridiculous.

As for the fact that she is dancing with “some Asian girls”, they aren’t “Asian”, they’re EAST Asian. Let’s all try to remember that there’s more to Asia than just the Pacific Rim. And if saying *that* won’t do it, just remind yourself of this: Kim Kardashian is Asian. No, she’s not what people would have called “Oriental”, but, being of Armenian extraction, she *is* Asian, at least ethnically speaking.

I like Avril Lavigne’s music, but this is a terrible song and a terrible video. bad production. The Japanese women don’t look happy to be in the video, that’s for sure.

Avril did a J-pop style video,in Japan, with Japanese talent and production staff, for her Japanese fans…who are legion. Yeah, the vid is kinda awful, but have you ever watched any Japanese TV? This is par for the course. Anybody who thinks it’s ‘awful’ or ‘disrespectful’ or even ‘racist’ is simply revealing their own ignorance. Talk about a tempest in a teacup…[even smaller than in a teapot...].

I actually asked a few Japanese friends, and I think they also think it’s kind of…demeaning to them and to me I felt uncomfortably racist. Try imagine a reversal role how about? Not everything about the Japanese culture is “cute”, and even so, the locals know how to use it more than a white girl like Avril trying to pull off stereotypes into video. i’m disappointed cuz I completely lost respect for her…
