5 craziest MTV VMA moments

- August 22nd, 2013

Unlike most of the boring, humdrum award shows out there, you can always guarantee that a Jerry Springer-type moment will happen at the MTV Video Music Awards.

And with the likes of Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar, Robin Thicke, Drake and Justin Timberlake all scheduled to appear at the Barclays Center in New York on Sunday, we’re pretty sure that this year will be no different.

The festivities get underway at 9 p.m. ET on MuchMusic.

Here’s our picks for the top 5 craziest moments from the VMAs:

5. Lady Gaga’s meat dress, 2010

Never has an outfit that actually covered someone up caused this much controversy. The tongue-wagging pop star showed up on the red carpet dressed as a steak, and it made the front pages of every newspaper the next day.

4. Eminem threatens Moby, 2002

Their war of words came to a head when, after Slim Shady accepted the award for Best Male Video, (he) called the DJ a “little girl.” After hearing some cat calls coming from Moby’s seating area, Em then said, “I will beat up a man with glasses.”

3. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s strange kiss, 1994

It will go down in history as one of the most uncomfortable award-opening moments on television. The newly-married couple attempted to show the world that they were indeed a legit pair, and it ended up working the opposite way. They lasted less than two years.

2. Kanye West ruins Taylor Swift’s moment in the sun, 2009

Kanye solidified his reputation as one of the biggest bad asses (or just an ass) around when he stormed the VMAs stage and hijacked (and overshadowed) Swift’s crowning achievement for Best Female Video that night. “Imma let you finish but…” became part of everyone’s vocabulary the next day.

1. Madonna & Britney kiss, 2003

Madonna attempted a phony “pass-the-torch” moment by locking lips with Britney Spears (as well as Christina Aguilera) at the 2003 VMAs that turned into tabloid fodder for months to come.

Frank Ocean added to Grammy lineup

- January 31st, 2013

It seems Frank Ocean’s banged up hand will be fully healed in time for the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10.

The Recording Academy announced Thursday that R&B superstar will play at the 55th annual event, along with newly added performers Maroon 5 and 14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys.

Ocean hurt his hand after an altercation with Chris Brown outside a Los Angeles recording studio parking lot last Sunday.

Ocean and Brown are both nominated for Grammys, so it will make for an interesting red carpet if Brown decides to show up.

Other performers include Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Jack White, fun., the Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, Dierks Bentley & Miranda Lambert, and Ed Sheeran & Elton John.

Six acts are tied for the most nominations with six each, including Ocean, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Kanye West, Jay-Z, fun. and Mumford & Sons.

Jack White added to Grammy Awards lineup

- January 24th, 2013

The lineup continues to expand in rapid numbers for next month’s Grammy Awards.

Grammy nominees The Lumineers, Carrie Underwood and Jack White are all scheduled to take the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 10.

Song of the Year nom Ed Sheeran is also tapped to duet with six-time Grammy winner Elton John, and country stars Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert will also pair up for the 55th annual event.

Other performers already announced include The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, fun., Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

White, who has nine Grammys on his bookshelf already, is nominated in three different categories: Album of the Year, Best Rock Album (“Blunderbuss”) and Best Rock Song (“Freedom at 21″ – watch below).

The show airs Feb. 10 from 8-11:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Yours truly as well as fellow scribe Mark Daniell will be giving instant reviews of each and every act on Grammy night. Follow us on Twitter: @johnwillms and @markhdaniell.
